Getting close to the 6 people with rising popularity!
B.A.P’s true artistic intentions talk.
Getting their big break soon after their Korean debut in January 2012, they’ve overcome borders, starting with Japan, Germany and others, and swept the rookie awards; the large-scale rookies “B.A.P”. Debuting in Japan in October last year, they’ve simultaneously gained attention in the blink of an eye, and boldly held a 3-city 6-concert arena tour only 2 months after debuting, causing a huge stir with B.A.P’s existence. There’s high speed rap interwoven in a strong and stately hip hop sound, and sharp powerful dancing to overwhelming 7 octave-strong vocals. Separating themselves from all the idol groups, they’ve gained attention from around the world with their inimitable performance. A huge dissection into B.A.P’s charisma that has caught Japan in a frenzy. The 6 with overflowing talent have told us their true intentions; what is their next stage?

The single “Excuse Me” that was released in September is a number where you can feel the strong confidence of B.A.P. Are you always aware of your “confidence”?
YJ: We perform on stage believing that our songs are the best and give our best to demonstrate our powers to the maximum. Having confidence is too a reason that makes a stage amazing. “Excuse Me” was originally recorded on a Korean album, but we made it into a single due to the strong support from Japanese fans. Since we filmed the MV in Japan around the time when we were able to express a song properly, I have confidence in the MV!

DH: I also have a lot of confidence in B.A.P’s songs. I guess “Excuse Me” is a song that especially reflects that.

HC: That’s right. We perform on stage with more confidence than anyone else. However, when we’re off stage, we each have parts where we don’t have confidence in!

YG: I don’t have confidence in many things other than music, so I’m not really something who’s filled with confidence when I’m off stage. I’m shy as well, so I’m not good at talking (laughs).

I felt that you placed quite some emphasis on the MV’s concept, sets and costumes.
DH: The image is a group of handsome phantom thieves I guess? (laughs). The costumes were different from what we wore before, being a bit stylish, and the set was grand too so it felt really fresh.

Jongup-san’s costume really resembled a butler in Japanese anime right?

JU: It seemed like it made an impact, so the reaction from fans were strong (laughs).

YJ: Jongup usually has a very pure personality, but he transforms into someone else entirely during filming, so there’s a gap which was interesting (laughs).

I’ve heard that you moved dorms and changed the room pairings.

JU: I share a room with Himchan-san. Instead of beds, there are two mattresses side by side, but Himchan-san often rolls over onto my side. When I wake up, I’ll ask him to “don’t come to my side”, and Himchan-san will reply with “same to you” (laughs). So, I took a proof photo of him invading and sleeping on my mattress and showed it to him!

HC: It’s not only me! When Jongup rolled over onto my side, I took a photo and showed it to him saying “you do it too”. Why don’t you tell them that you do the same thing too (laughs).

YJ: I have my own room and I always open the window in summer, but the mosquitoes get in…… that’s why I always sleep with insect spray next to my pillow (laughs). We wanted to raise a dog in the dorms, but it would be cruel to leave it alone so we gave up on that. Yongguk-san has a dog at his parent’s home, and he often sends pictures and videos, but it seriously is so cute.

YG: It would’ve been nice to raise one in the dorms. However, it would be discourteous to the dog to make it sad. By the way, I also have my own room, and taking all my clothes off to sleep is comfortable and nice (laughs). I can’t do that if I shared the room with someone.

DH: When we moved in, I randomly went into a room, and Zelo naturally went after me, so we ended up using the same room (laughs).

ZL: I put things here and there in the room, so maybe Daehyun-san might feel a bit cramped. But since we sleep early and wake early, our sleeping cycles match perfectly.

YG: Daehyun is proper with his life rhythm, so Zelo came to follow that pace too.

HC: I too match perfectly with Jongup in our sleeping characteristics! We both sleep late and wake late because we sleep really well (laughs).

What was this year like for B.A.P?

DH: Since we had many overseas activities, we met a lot of foreign fans. To me, it was a happy year where I gained a lot of good experiences!

JU: The “Live On Earth” world tour where we went around four continents was the most memorable. We stayed for short periods, but going to countries that I usually can’t was fun. Everyone matured through the new experiences.

YJ: It was a year with many things, but we finished the world tour nicely and it was a year where we gained a strong foothold towards the next tour.

HC: The tour was really fun! We were so busy that we didn’t have time to rest, but it gave us a lot of energy.

YG: There were more Japanese fans than last year, and it was a year where I felt an even more passionate and heated response from them. I can feel that in the flesh when I’m standing on stage so I’m very happy. I think it was a better year than the last, so it’d be good if I can enjoy the same emotions next year too.

ZL: I think so too. This was a happy year, so I hope that it’s a happy one next year too!

There’s an image of you shifting from “mischievous boys” to a more mature one, so what’s the next stage that B.A.P is aiming towards?
YG: I feel like I need to give a clear answer whenever I am asked that, but I think it’s something that no one knows. I don’t wish to only do music in a limited genre, and I think that there’re still many things that the 6 of us can do. I myself don’t know what we’ll do next, but maturing and the shared thought to show a better stage is our motivation.

JU: I want to challenge more and more new things, so I’m not focused on one single image. I have the confidence that we can interpret any style of genre with a B.A.P colour and reveal it, so I want to always continue searching for new images.

YJ: That’s right. The scope of genres that we can do is very wide, so we’ve challenged various images like being powerful and being soft. There’s still much more that we can do, so I want to release an album with a charm that is unique to B.A.P.

HC: I promise that regardless of the genre, we’ll continue to show a cool performance with B.A.P-like originality!
